Why You Shouldn't Switch Your PRO (And What Can Go Wrong If You Do)

Thinking about leaving ASCAP for BMI, jumping to SESAC, or chasing a GMR invite? Read this first.

Every year around resignation season, thousands of songwriters and publishers start Googling some version of "should I switch from ASCAP to BMI" or "is SESAC better than BMI" or "how do I leave my PRO." The pitch usually comes from a friend, a manager, or a slick rep who promises higher rates, faster payments, or better service at a different Performing Rights Organization (PRO).

Sometimes switching is the right call. But far more often, the switch causes more damage than it fixes: royalty gaps, catalog chaos, broken relationships, and months (sometimes years) of cleanup. Before you sign a resignation letter, it's worth understanding exactly what you're risking.

This isn't an argument that ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and GMR are all identical. They're not. It's an argument that the switching process itself carries real, underappreciated risk, and that risk is rarely priced into the decision.

How PRO Switching Actually Works (And Why the Mechanics Matter)

A PRO's job is to license the public performance of your musical works (radio, streaming performance royalties, live venues, TV, restaurants, and more) and pay you and your co-writers your share. When you're affiliated with a PRO, every registered work in your catalog is tied to that organization's databases, its reciprocal deals with foreign societies, and its licensing relationships with broadcasters and venues.

Switching isn't like changing banks. You can't just "port" your catalog over on your own schedule. Every PRO enforces a resignation window: a specific, narrow period (often tied to your anniversary date or the calendar year) during which you're allowed to give notice. Miss it, and you're locked in for another full term, sometimes a full year or more.

That structural rigidity is the root of almost every problem on this list.

1. Royalty Collection Gaps During the Transition

This is the big one. Performance royalties are collected and distributed on a lag, often three to nine months after the performance actually happened. When you resign from one PRO and affiliate with another, there's frequently a blackout period where:

Your old PRO stops collecting on your behalf as of your effective resignation date
Your new PRO can't start collecting until your affiliation is active and your catalog is registered
Performances that happen in that gap window can go uncollected entirely, or get delayed for months while the PROs sort out who was responsible for what date

If you're mid-catalog with dozens or hundreds of songs generating steady airplay, streaming, or live performance activity, a poorly timed switch can mean real money falls into a crack that nobody is chasing.

2. Resignation Windows and Notice Periods Are Stricter Than You Think

Songwriters routinely underestimate how unforgiving these windows are. Decide in March that you want to leave, and you may discover your notice period already closed in January, meaning you're stuck for another 9-12 months. During that stuck period, if you've already told collaborators, labels, or sync licensors you're "with BMI now," you've created confusion that has nothing to do with reality.

Worse, some writers submit resignation paperwork incorrectly or late, assume they're free to affiliate elsewhere, and then find themselves in a dispute between two PROs both claiming rights to the same catalog for an overlapping period, which can freeze royalty payments from both sides until it's resolved.

3. Your Entire Catalog Has to Be Re-Registered, Song by Song

This is the part almost nobody accounts for. Switching PROs doesn't transfer your registrations. It starts them over. Every single work needs to be re-registered with the new PRO, including:

Correct title and alternate titles
All writer and publisher splits
ISWC and IPI numbers correctly matched
Correct role designations for every collaborator

If you have a catalog of 20 songs, this is annoying. If you have a catalog of 300+ songs across multiple co-writers, publishers, and decades, this is a massive administrative undertaking, and any error introduced during re-entry (a wrong split, a missing co-writer, a mismatched ISWC) can suppress royalty payments on that specific work until someone catches and fixes it. Often, nobody catches it for a long time.

4. Co-Writer and Split Complications

Songs rarely have one writer. The moment you switch PROs, you introduce a mismatch risk with every co-writer who didn't switch with you. Performance royalties are typically paid per-writer-share directly by each writer's own PRO, so in theory, your co-writers aren't directly affected. In practice, though:

Cue sheets and registration records can fall out of sync between the different PROs representing different writers on the same work
If your co-writer's PRO and your new PRO don't have matching metadata for the same song, one or both of you can experience payment delays
Joint works with international co-writers can trigger extra scrutiny from foreign collecting societies trying to reconcile ownership splits across two different domestic PRO records

The more collaborators you have, the more moving parts you're multiplying by switching.

5. International Sub-Publishing and Reciprocal Agreement Disruptions

U.S. PROs collect your foreign performance royalties through reciprocal agreements with sister societies abroad: PRS in the UK, GEMA in Germany, SACEM in France, AKM in Austria, and dozens of others. These relationships, data formats, and processing timelines are not identical across ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and GMR.

When you switch, your international royalty pipeline effectively resets. Foreign societies need updated documentation confirming your new affiliation before they'll route royalties correctly, and this process can lag far behind domestic re-registration. Writers with meaningful international airplay or streaming activity (sync placements running in European TV, catalog songs still getting spins abroad) are often the ones hit hardest, because the money is already moving through a pipeline that now needs to be redirected mid-stream.

6. You Lose Institutional History and Relationships

PROs aren't just royalty pipes. They're also advocates. Your rep at ASCAP or BMI or SESAC knows your catalog, your genre, your touring patterns, and your sync opportunities. That relationship has value: faster issue resolution, better advocacy in rate court proceedings, personalized guidance on maximizing live performance reporting.

Switch PROs and you start that relationship from zero. You lose whatever informal credit, familiarity, or fast-track handling you'd built up, and you inherit whatever the new rep's current workload and priorities happen to be.

7. Cue Sheet and Sync Licensing Continuity Gets Disrupted

If you have music placed in film, TV, or games, cue sheets identify your PRO affiliation so performance royalties route correctly when the content airs or streams. A mid-stream PRO switch means every previously-placed cue sheet referencing your old affiliation is now technically outdated. Some music supervisors and production companies are diligent about updating cue sheet data when writers switch PROs. Many are not. That mismatch can suppress royalties on legacy placements for years without anyone noticing, because nobody is actively watching old cue sheets for accuracy.

8. The Grass Isn't Always Greener: Rate Differences Get Overstated

A lot of the sales pitch behind switching PROs is built on anecdote: "BMI paid my friend more for the same stream count," or "SESAC negotiates better blanket rates." In reality:

Distribution formulas, weighting factors, and premium/bonus programs vary by PRO and by genre, format, and performance type; a rate advantage in one context can be a disadvantage in another
Your actual royalty outcome depends heavily on your specific catalog's performance mix (radio-heavy vs. streaming-heavy vs. live-heavy), not just which PRO is "better" in the abstract
Marketing claims about superior rates are often based on a specific writer's specific catalog composition, not a guarantee that generalizes to yours

Chasing a rumored rate advantage without modeling your own catalog's actual performance mix is a common way to take on real transition risk for a theoretical (and often unrealized) upside.

9. Administrative Errors: ISWC and IPI Mismatches

Every work has an ISWC (International Standard Musical Work Code) and every writer/publisher has an IPI (Interested Parties Information) number. These identifiers are how performance data gets matched to the right royalty recipient across a chain of PROs, distributors, and DSPs. Re-registering your catalog at a new PRO introduces fresh opportunity for these identifiers to be entered incorrectly, duplicated, or left blank, and any of these mistakes can silently break the matching chain and suppress payment on that work indefinitely, with no automatic alert that anything went wrong.

10. Loss of Negotiated Advances or Signing Incentives

If you received an advance, signing bonus, or minimum guarantee as part of your original PRO affiliation deal, resigning early can trigger repayment obligations or forfeiture clauses. Read your original affiliation agreement carefully: the "free" money that got you in the door often isn't free if you leave before the term you agreed to.

11. Confusion Among Collaborators, Labels, and Licensees

Every time you change PRO affiliation, every party who interacts with your catalog (co-writers, publishers, labels, sync licensors, performing venues) needs to update their records to reflect it. In practice, this update happens unevenly and slowly. The result is a long tail of outdated paperwork pointing licensing and royalty flows at your old affiliation, well after you've moved on.

When Switching Might Still Make Sense

None of this means you should never switch. There are legitimate reasons writers move PROs: genuinely better fit for their genre and territory mix, access to SESAC or GMR's more curated, higher-touch representation model, dissatisfaction with a specific PRO's service or transparency, or simply consolidating catalogs after a publishing deal. If you do decide to move forward, the point isn't "never switch." It's switch deliberately, with your eyes open to the operational risk, not on the strength of a sales pitch alone.

How to Protect Yourself If You Do Decide to Switch

Confirm your exact resignation window and notice deadline in writing before telling anyone you're switching
Get a full export of your current catalog's registration data (splits, ISWC/IPI, alternate titles) before you resign
Build a re-registration checklist and confirm every work, every split, and every collaborator match before going live with the new PRO
Notify co-writers, publishers, and key sync/licensing contacts directly rather than assuming metadata updates will happen automatically
Monitor your royalty statements closely for at least two to three distribution cycles after the switch to catch anything that fell through the cracks
Keep records of both PROs' correspondence in case a dispute arises over the transition period

The Bottom Line

Switching your PRO is a real decision with real operational consequences, not a simple account transfer. The catalog re-registration burden, the resignation window rigidity, the international reciprocal agreement reset, and the sheer number of parties who need updated records all create windows where royalties can quietly go missing. Most writers who switch PROs don't regret the destination. They regret how little visibility they had into the transition itself, and how long it took to notice something had broken.

If you're evaluating a PRO switch, the smartest first step isn't picking a new PRO. It's getting a clear, current picture of exactly how your existing registrations, splits, and royalty flows are working today, so you know precisely what's at stake before you touch any of it.
