ASCAP Membership Cost Compared With BMI for Working Songwriters

Most sources put the ASCAP songwriter signup fee at a one-time $50 charge, while BMI has always let songwriters join for free. One more recently published source states that ASCAP now waives the writer fee too, including when you sign up as a writer and publisher at the same time. That's a real discrepancy worth flagging rather than picking a side: pricing pages change, and the gap between $50 and free is small enough that it shouldn't be the only thing driving your decision anyway.

Signup cost is just one line item. Contract length, how fast each PRO actually pays you, and who owns the organization collecting your money all affect what membership is worth over time. Here's how ASCAP and BMI compare on each.

ASCAP and BMI Signup Fees for Songwriters and Publishers

On the writer side, the fee comes down to timing: older sources put it at a one-time $50 charge with no annual dues afterward, while the most recently published comparison says ASCAP now waives the writer fee entirely, including when you register as a writer and publisher at the same time. BMI's writer signup has always been free either way. Check ASCAP's current signup page before you apply rather than budgeting around either figure, since a $50 one-time difference shouldn't be the deciding factor on its own.

The bigger cost gap shows up on the publisher side. ASCAP charges a flat $50 for publisher-only membership, whether you're an individual or a company. BMI's publisher fees scale with entity type: older sources cite $150 for an individual publisher and $250 for a corporation, while more recent reporting lists $175 for an individual, $250 for a corporation or LLC, and $500 for a partnership.

That difference matters most if you're setting up a publishing entity alongside your writer membership. If ASCAP is waiving both the writer and publisher fees for simultaneous signup, joining both sides at once through ASCAP is meaningfully cheaper than doing the same through BMI, where the publisher fee applies regardless of how you register as a writer. If you're joining as a writer only, with no publishing company yet, the fee gap between the two is small enough that contract length and payout speed should carry more weight in the decision. Which path applies to you comes down to timing: register as a writer only now and you can always add a publishing entity later, but if you already know you're setting one up, joining both at once is where the ASCAP-versus-BMI cost gap is largest.

Contract Length You Are Committing To

ASCAP writer agreements run one year and renew automatically, with notice requirements if you want to resign. BMI writer agreements run two years. If you're not sure a PRO is the right long-term fit, or you want the flexibility to switch later, ASCAP's shorter term gives you an earlier exit point without extra cost.

The gap widens on the publisher side. BMI publisher agreements run five years, which is longer than even BMI's own writer term, and that length applies regardless of which entity type you registered under or what you paid to set it up. If you're setting up a publishing company and expect your situation to change, whether that's a new deal, a new collaborator structure, or just wanting more flexibility, that five-year commitment is worth weighing against the shorter and cheaper ASCAP publisher option. A five-year term also means any dissatisfaction with payout speed or transparency is something you'd be living with for longer once you sign as a BMI publisher.

How Fast Each PRO Pays Out

BMI pays faster on performance royalties. One source puts BMI's average payout time at 5.5 months after the performance quarter, compared to 6.5 months for ASCAP. Another source cites a wider ASCAP range of 6 to 9 months against BMI's 5 to 6 months. How long it takes to receive music royalties overall depends on more than just which PRO you join, since mechanical and digital performance royalties move through separate systems on their own schedules, but on the performance-royalty check itself, BMI consistently lands ahead by roughly one to three months.

If cash flow timing matters more to you than the signup fee, that gap can outweigh whatever you'd save joining ASCAP for free or at a lower cost. A working songwriter who depends on performance royalties as regular income may find BMI's faster cycle worth more over a year than the $50 difference in signup fees. Someone with steady income from other sources, who can wait the extra month or two, may not weight payout speed as heavily.

Nonprofit Structure Versus BMI's New For-Profit Ownership

ASCAP is a member-owned nonprofit and publishes its distribution rules and full financials every year, so any member can see how collections are split and where the money goes. That level of disclosure is part of what sets it apart from BMI now that BMI operates under private ownership.

BMI's structure changed in February 2024, when New Mountain Capital completed its acquisition of the organization, with Google's investment arm CapitalG taking a minority stake. BMI's CEO announced the company would retain roughly 15% of collections going forward to cover overhead and a modest profit margin, up from its historical 10%. Under this new for-profit model, BMI stopped disclosing headline revenue figures, so writers no longer get the same annual financial transparency ASCAP still publishes.

That retained-percentage shift is the clearest financial marker of the change for writers: a slightly bigger slice of every dollar collected now funds the company itself rather than flowing out to affiliates. Both organizations still split a song's royalties between the songwriter and publisher shares, with the percentages set by the writer during song registration, so that part of the economics hasn't moved at either PRO. But if you care about knowing exactly how much of your money the organization keeps versus pays out, ASCAP's published annual financials give you more to look at than BMI currently discloses under its new ownership.

SESAC and Why It Is Not an Open Option

SESAC comes up in a lot of PRO searches, but it isn't something you can simply apply to join. It's a private, for-profit organization that operates by invitation only, with roughly 30,000 affiliated writers and just over a million licensed works, compared to ASCAP's and BMI's millions of members and tens of millions of works between them.

Whatever SESAC's specific terms are, they're beside the point for most working songwriters since you can't sign up without being invited. For practical purposes, the choice for most writers comes down to ASCAP and BMI.

Membership Perks That Rarely Decide the Choice

ASCAP membership includes a handful of extras beyond royalty collection: discounted access to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the MusicPro program with discounts on health, dental, instrument, and life insurance, discounts on ASCAP's Web Tools marketing apps, hotel and rental car discounts, and membership in US Alliance Federal Credit Union.

These are worth knowing about, but they shouldn't be what decides your membership. Both organizations offer some form of member benefits on top of the base signup fee, and neither perk set changes the underlying royalty economics. If you're already leaning toward one PRO based on cost, contract length, and payout speed, these extras are a reasonable nudge rather than a reason to reverse that decision. Treat them only as a final tiebreaker if the bigger factors still leave you undecided.

What the ASCAP or BMI Fee Does Not Cover

Whatever you pay to join ASCAP or BMI only buys you performance royalty collection on your compositions, and understanding the limits of Performance Rights Organizations matters just as much as comparing their fees. That's the royalty generated when your song is played on radio, in venues, or through certain streaming categories. It does not cover mechanical royalties, which are generated by streams and downloads and flow through the Mechanical Licensing Collective, a separate organization you need to register with independently. It also doesn't cover digital sound recording performance royalties from satellite radio, internet radio, and other non-interactive streaming, which flow through SoundExchange to the recording artist and label rather than to the songwriter.

Neither PRO actively monitors where your song gets performed. Usage is self-reported by venues and broadcasters through broadcast logs and cue sheets. If a venue misreports a performance, or your song's metadata doesn't match what's in the PRO's system, your payout can come up short regardless of which organization you joined or how much you paid to sign up. A low or waived signup fee tells you nothing about whether your registrations elsewhere, with the MLC or SoundExchange, are actually in place and accurate.

This is where a lot of working songwriters lose money without realizing it. Mogul helps artists and songwriters check for these registration gaps across PROs, the MLC, and SoundExchange, and estimate what royalties may not be reaching them. That's not a guarantee of a specific dollar amount, since actual recoverable royalties depend on what's actually misregistered or unclaimed in each system. But if you've only ever thought about the ASCAP or BMI signup fee, it's worth checking whether your mechanical and digital performance royalties are being collected at all.

Which PRO Fits Your Situation

If you're a new songwriter with no publishing entity and want the lowest cost and shortest commitment, ASCAP's lower or waived signup fee and one-year self-renewing term make it the lighter initial commitment compared to BMI's two-year writer term. That shorter term matters most if you're still deciding whether performance royalty collection through a PRO is even the right first move, since it gives you an earlier point to reassess without extra cost or a long wait to make a change.

If you're setting up a publishing company, ASCAP's flat $50 publisher fee is cheaper than BMI's publisher fees, which range from $150 to $500 depending on whether you're registering as an individual, a corporation, or a partnership. Combined with BMI's five-year publisher agreement, that's a bigger commitment on both cost and time.

If cash flow timing matters most, BMI's payout cycle of roughly 5 to 5.5 months beats ASCAP's 6.5 to 9 months. For a songwriter who relies on performance royalty income arriving on a predictable schedule, that speed can be worth more than a lower signup fee.

If you care about transparency and how much overhead the organization keeps, ASCAP's published annual financials are easier to verify than BMI's disclosures under its new for-profit, private-equity-owned structure, which retains roughly 15% of collections and no longer publishes headline revenue figures.

Whichever PRO you choose, membership only handles performance royalties. You'll still need to register separately with the Mechanical Licensing Collective for mechanical royalties and with SoundExchange for digital performance royalties on your recordings to capture the full picture of what you're owed.
