Album Cover Size Requirements Across the Major Streaming Services

Every major distributor runs your cover art through an automated check before your release ever reaches a platform. That check looks at resolution, color mode, file format, and whether the image shows signs of being stretched up from something smaller. If your artwork was originally 800x800 pixels and you resized it to 3000x3000 in an editor, the software can tell. Upscaling adds visible artifacts and softens edges in ways a genuine high-resolution file does not, and distributors flag it automatically rather than relying on someone looking at the image.

That single check causes more rejected deliveries than almost anything else in the submission process, but it's not the only one. Wrong color mode, text that doesn't match your release metadata, and content the platforms simply don't allow can all stop a release before it goes live. The good news is that one spec, prepared correctly, clears every major platform's requirements at once, and you don't need a different file for each service.

What Gets an Album Cover Rejected at Delivery

Rejections fall into three categories, and knowing which one you're dealing with tells you how to fix it.

Technical rejections come from the file itself. Resolution below a platform's stated minimum, a color mode built for print instead of screens, visible pixelation, or blur are the most common culprits. Distributors also specifically watch for upscaled images. If your source photo or design file was smaller than your target dimensions and you stretched it to fit, automated review tools are built to catch that pattern and deny the submission rather than let a soft or artifact-heavy image go live.

Color mode causes a specific and avoidable version of this problem. Digital cover art needs to be in RGB, the color model built for screens. If you submit a file saved in CMYK, the color mode used for offset printing, colors render washed out and dull on screen, and many platforms reject the file outright rather than displaying it incorrectly.

Policy rejections have nothing to do with image quality. A technically perfect 3000x3000 RGB file can still get bounced if it contains a URL, a price, or other content the platform doesn't allow on cover art.

Metadata rejections sit in a third category: the text on your artwork itself. If the artist name or title printed on the cover doesn't match what you entered in your release metadata, that mismatch triggers a rejection independent of the image's technical quality.

Knowing which category a rejection falls into matters because the fix is different each time. A technical rejection means re-exporting the file correctly. A policy or metadata rejection means editing the artwork or your release information to bring the two into agreement.

The Universal Safe Spec for Digital Cover Art

The safe spec that clears every major platform's minimum at once is a 3000x3000 pixel square image, saved in RGB color mode, exported as a JPEG or PNG. That's the industry standard cited across distributor documentation, and it's the file worth building from the start rather than resizing down later for each platform.

Each piece of that spec does specific work. The 3000x3000 dimension is large enough to exceed every documented platform minimum, so you're never scrambling to find a slightly bigger version later. The 1:1 square aspect ratio is a hard requirement, not a suggestion, because every major streaming service displays cover art as a square, whether that's a tiny thumbnail on a phone or a full-size now-playing screen. RGB color mode matches how screens actually render color; CMYK is built for ink on paper and will look wrong, or get rejected, when submitted for digital delivery.

JPEG and PNG are the two accepted formats. Both compress well without visibly degrading a properly sized image, and both keep your file comfortably under the size caps distributors enforce. Those caps vary by platform, commonly landing somewhere between 4MB and 20MB, but a well-compressed 3000x3000 JPEG or PNG rarely comes close to hitting the ceiling. You don't need to hunt for the exact cap on every platform if your export settings are reasonable.

The practical benefit of building to this spec once is that you stop resizing art for each individual platform. A file that meets the universal spec already satisfies every documented minimum, so the same cover art file goes to every distributor and platform without modification. That's one less step in your release process and one less place for a mismatch or resubmission to creep in.

How Minimum Album Cover Size Requirements Vary by Platform

The 3000x3000 spec is the safe target, but it's worth understanding why platforms don't all state the same minimum, since you'll see different numbers depending on where you look.

TuneCore states a minimum resolution of 1600x1600 pixels for its own submissions, and separately notes that getting music onto Spotify specifically requires at least 1500x1500 pixels. Tidal's documented minimum is also 1500x1500, paired with a 10MB file size cap. Bandcamp sets its recommended floor at 1400x1400 pixels but flags 3000x3000 as the better choice for anyone who wants to avoid resubmitting later. None of these numbers contradict each other; they're simply different platforms drawing their line at different points, all comfortably below the 3000x3000 target.

The risk shows up below 1400x1400. Anything under that threshold tends to look visibly blurry on retina and other high-density displays, and several distributors will reject it outright rather than pass along a soft image. That threshold isn't arbitrary. It's roughly the point where compression and upscaling artifacts become noticeable at normal viewing sizes, even before you consider that a listener might zoom in.

It's also worth knowing what actually happens to your file after upload. Spotify displays cover art at sizes ranging from a 64x64 pixel thumbnail up to full resolution on desktop, and most listeners see your artwork at something closer to 50 to 150 pixels on mobile. Your 3000x3000 master gets downscaled for nearly every real-world view. That's not wasted effort. The platform needs the full-resolution file on hand so it can generate a sharp thumbnail, a sharp now-playing image, and a sharp version for any future redesign, without asking you to resubmit. Submitting a small file to save space just removes that flexibility for no real benefit.

Physical Format Specs for CD and Vinyl Covers

Physical formats run on a completely different spec than digital delivery, and the two aren't interchangeable. Where digital art is RGB at roughly 72 DPI, print art needs to be in CMYK color mode at a minimum of 300 DPI, with 350 DPI or higher preferred for premium printing. DPI, or dots per inch, measures how much detail a printer can lay down per inch of physical paper; screens don't use this measurement because pixels, not ink dots, define what you see.

A standard 12-inch vinyl LP cover needs to be 12.375 by 12.375 inches at 300 DPI, which works out to roughly 3713x3713 pixels. That's noticeably larger than the 3000x3000 digital standard, because a 12-inch sleeve sitting in someone's hands under good light shows far more detail than a phone screen ever will. Print jobs also typically include a small margin of extra image, called bleed, around the edge of the design. The industry standard bleed is 0.125 inch, and it exists so that minor shifts during the cutting process don't leave a visible white sliver at the edge of the finished cover.

CD printing has its own version of this requirement. Amazon's on-demand CD printing, for example, calls for 300 DPI resolution, the same floor as vinyl, even though the physical dimensions are much smaller.

The most common mistake here is converting a finished RGB digital file straight to CMYK for print without adjusting anything. RGB and CMYK represent color differently, and a straight conversion often shifts colors in ways you won't see until the physical product arrives. Vivid blues and greens are especially prone to looking duller or shifting hue once they hit CMYK ink. If you're ordering physical product, build or convert the artwork with that color mode in mind from the start rather than treating it as a last step before sending the file to print.

Content Rules That Trigger Rejection Beyond Pixel Dimensions

A technically perfect file can still get rejected for what's printed on it. Distributors prohibit a specific set of content categories on cover art, regardless of resolution or file format. That list includes URLs, social media handles, contact information, pricing, store or platform logos, and UPC barcodes, which belong on the back of a physical product, not the front cover. It also rules out references to the product's format, like the words "CD," "vinyl," or "digital single," along with availability statements such as "available on Spotify" and promotional or time-based language like "new," "latest single," or "limited edition." None of these trigger a technical rejection; they trigger a policy one, and a distributor can catch them even on an image that's otherwise flawless.

Separate from that list is a rule about the text on the artwork itself. Whatever appears on your cover, the artist name, the album or track title, has to exactly match what you entered in your release metadata. If you list a featured artist in the cover art text, that same featured artist needs to be entered in the release's metadata fields too. A cover that says "Song Title (feat. Artist B)" but doesn't list Artist B anywhere in the metadata is a mismatch, and it's flagged as its own rejection category separate from image quality or prohibited content.

This isn't just a formatting technicality. The same artist name, title, and featured-artist information you enter for your release is the data your PRO, the MLC, and SoundExchange rely on for royalty registration further downstream. A mismatch between your cover art and your metadata is a visible sign that something in your release information is inconsistent, and that inconsistency doesn't stop at the artwork. It's worth getting the artist name, title, and featured-artist fields right and matching everywhere the first time, since fixing a metadata inconsistency after the fact is a separate task from fixing the cover.

Fixing Cover Art After a Release Is Already Live

If your artwork went live with the wrong dimensions, the wrong color mode, or a metadata mismatch, you don't need to pull the release down and resubmit it from scratch. Correcting the artwork is a separate, smaller action than resubmitting the whole release, and distributors handle it as an update rather than a new submission.

What you should expect is a delay before the fix shows up everywhere. Once you submit corrected artwork through your distributor, it takes roughly one to seven days to propagate out to each individual platform. That's not instant, and it's not uniform. During that window, some platforms may still be showing your old artwork while others have already updated to the new file, simply because each platform pulls the update on its own schedule.

The practical takeaway is patience combined with a quick double-check. Submit the corrected file once it meets the full spec, RGB, 3000x3000, no prohibited content, metadata that matches, and then give it up to a week before assuming something went wrong. If a platform still shows the old artwork after that window has clearly passed, that's the point to follow up with your distributor rather than resubmitting again.

Choosing and Preparing Your Cover Art Before You Submit

The decision every artist faces before uploading is whether to build to a specific platform's stated minimum or to the universal 3000x3000 RGB spec. Building to the universal spec is almost always the better call. A file that meets it already clears every documented platform floor at once, which means you're not tracking separate minimums for Spotify, Tidal, TuneCore, and Bandcamp, and you're not stuck resizing and resubmitting if you add a new distributor later.

This matters most if you're designing in a free tool. Canva's templates, for example, default to a 1400x1400 export. That passes most platform minimums on its own, but it sits well below the recommended 3000x3000, and it scales worse if you ever need the artwork for a larger format like a vinyl sleeve or a promotional print. If you're designing in Canva or a similar tool, changing the canvas size to 3000x3000 before you start is a small step that saves you from redoing the work later.

Before you upload anything, run through the same checklist a distributor's automated system will run through. Confirm the file is a perfect square at 1:1, not a rectangle cropped close to square. Confirm it's saved in RGB, not CMYK, unless you're specifically preparing a print file. Confirm the format and file size match what your target distributor accepts. Check the image itself for any prohibited content, no URLs, no pricing, no store logos, no format or availability language. Finally, confirm that every piece of text on the cover, artist name, title, and any featured artist, matches your submitted release metadata exactly.

Clearing all of that at once means your submission passes both the technical check and the policy check on the first pass, without a rejection notice sending you back to fix one detail at a time.
